چکیده

We describe a real-time classical solution of c = 1 string field theory written in terms of the phase space density, u(p, q, t), of the equivalent fermion theory. The solution corresponds to tunnelling of a single fermion above the filled fermi sea and leads to amplitudes that go as exp(−C/gstr). We discuss how one can use this technique to describe non-perturbative effects in the Marinari-Parisi model. We also discuss implications of this type of solution for the two-dimensional black hole. ⋆ [email protected]. † [email protected]. ‡ [email protected]

Status of Supersymmetry Breaking in String Theory*

Recent developments in understanding supersymmetry breaking in superstring theory are summarized. Presented at Particles and Fields ‘91, Vancouver, BC, Canada, August 18-22, 1991 * Work supported by the Department of Energy, contract DE-AC03-76SF00515. Superstring theory appears to be a viable candidate for a consistent theory of quantum gravity which also bears the possibility of unifying of a...

Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach Mathematical Aspects of String Theory

Introduction The conference was organised by David R. Morrison (Duke University, Durham) and by Werner Nahm (Physikalisches Institut der Universität Bonn). String theory is the field of mathematical physics which has created by far the most intense interactions between mathematicians and theoretical physicists in the past years. It contains a perturbative domain which is described by two–dimens...

DEVELOPMENT IN STRING THEORY

The string theory is a fast moving subject, both physics wise and in the respect of mathematics. In order to keep up with the discipline it is important to move with new ideas which are being stressed. Here I wish to give extracts from new papers of ideas which I have recently found interesting. There are six papers which are involved: I ."Strings formulated directly in 4 dimensions " A. N...

Supersymmetry Breaking in Superstring Theory by Gaugino Condensation and its Phenomenology

The weakly-coupled heterotic string is known to have problems of dilaton/moduli stabilization, supersymmetry breaking (by hidden-sector gaugino condensation), gauge coupling unification (or the Newton’s constant), QCD axion, as well as cosmological problems involving dilaton/moduli and axion. We study these problems by adopting the point of view that they arise mostly due to our limited calcula...

Duality, Enhanced Symmetry and ‘massless Black Holes’

String theory is defined perturbatively through a set of rules for calculating scattering amplitudes. Perhaps the most important outstanding problem is that of finding the non-perturbative theory whose perturbation theory reproduces that of string theory. This seems a daunting task, but recent progress has led to some striking conjectures regarding the non-perturbative structure of the theory t...
